There’s been a lot of buzz about self-care. Not many black women or women in general know exactly what selfcare means. You can check out my recent post What is Self-care and How Can It Benefit You? . This post gives a breakdown on self-care entails.
In this post I will share some tips I normally use for my
daily self-care routine. As a black woman myself I feel most times we need to
lay back, breathe and take care of our body, mind and soul.

Find a great therapist. If you’re on a budget you can use
other affordable formal and informal mental health services. Talking to a
therapist doesn’t mean something is wrong with you – but it provides a medium
to just talk to someone about everything that’s going on with you. This could
be your fears, weakness etc. You could read mental health books online, watch
videos – if your religious have a quality time with God, tell Him about
everything going on with you. He always listens.
Laugh at least once a day -Aim to belly laugh. Identify
things that make you laugh and shamelessly pursue it. You could watch comedy
shows, movies – just anything as far as you laugh your stress and worries away.
Practice aromatherapy. (What is aromatherapy)
Read self-motivating books and journals.
Read quotes that inspire and ground you in your worthiness.
Say daily mantras that affirm you.
Arrange your room. A tidy environment can declutter your
mind, too – makes you think more clearly and accurately.
Watch Tv shows that empower you and uplift your spirit.
There are wide variety of speakers- look for one that you like and enjoy.
Get a Journal! Release all your thoughts, worries and fear
in that journal. Try it – it helps. Not only does it serve as a means for
release – you can return to it for insights.
You don’t have to have amazing drawing skills, just doodle
something on a sheet. It inspires your imagination and most importantly it
helps to relieve stress.
Draw how you feel. You may be amazed at how you can express
your feelings more effectively with images than with words.
Learn a dance move!! Just dance lol even though you suck at
it (in the privacy of your own room)
Memorize your favorite song and if possible, sing your heart
out. (in the privacy of your own home, again,
if your singing voice can sound kind off awkward)
Learn to appreciate the beautiful things around you.
Write an affirmation letter to yourself.
Drink lots of water. It helps to naturally detox.
Cook some of your favorite meals.
Eat meals with more veggies and less carbohydrates.
Dedicate 1 – 2 hours a week to plan out and cook your food
for the week. This ensures that you are conscious of how to feed your worthy
body throughout the week and helps you not make last minute (likely unhealthy)
Breathe. No, really. Take 1+ minutes to focus on your exhale
5 minute dance breaks each day or whenever you remember wont
hurt. Just Get loose and happy.
Stretch daily. A good stretch helps with blood flow and will
have you feeling better in no time..
Start your day with a little exercise and get your
adrenaline going. Dedicating at least 10 mins a day is enough.
Get at least 8 hours of sleep. Set an alarm to go to bed.
Take warm baths and soak in epson salt.
You deserve a massage so treat yourself with a self-massage
(or a paid massage if money allows).
Create healthy boundaries. Remove toxic friends, quit that
toxic job, relationship. Strategize how you can create some more space for
yourself. Then, give yourself permission to try to do so.
Go in front of the mirror and tell yourself how valuable you
are. Repeat it until you believe it more and more. If you’ve never done this
before that’s okay, try it out next time you’re brushing your teeth.
Experience nature. Walk barefoot on grass, try and see the
sun rise and sunset. Nature is enriched with infinite wisdom let it be your
Make time to have fun,go out with friends. Having fun isn’t
only meant for teens. Plan a girl’s trip because you deserve it. You deserve to
smile, feel free and beautiful.
Scream into a pillow to release some stress.
Grow a plant. Something about seeing a living thing grow
with the right amount of water and sun can remind us to take care of ourselves
Worship and pray based on your personal spiritual beliefs
that fortifies and nourishes you.
Make a list of things your grateful for. Gratitude can shift
your focus to abundance
